7 July 2009, London – HIT Entertainment, producer and rights owner of the popular children’s character Angelina Ballerina, in partnership with the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards has announced the launch of a new national dance award initiative for young performers across the UK in a search to find the ultimate young budding ballerina, heroic hip-hop dancer or sassy salsa performer. Entry to The Angelina Ballerina Children’s Award opens 1 July 2009 and offers young performers aged up to 9 years old the chance to fulfill their dancing dreams.

The national award will be judged by a panel of experts from within the dance community including TV presenter and MC for the National Dance Awards, Angela Rippon, Dirty Dancing star and former Royal Ballet dancer Martin Harvey, English National Ballet choreographer Antony Dowson and Katherine Holabird, the author and creator of Angelina Ballerina. 25 young performers from across the country will be shortlisted and invited to audition live in front of the panel of judges in the studios of English National Ballet on 28 October 2009.

The inaugural winner of the Angelina Ballerina Children’s Award will be announced at the annual Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House on 21 January 2010. The winner will also get the chance to spend a day rehearsing with the prestigious English National Ballet dancers under the tutelage of renowned choreographer Antony Dowson.

Mike Dixon, Chairman Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards commented, “The Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards is delighted to be honouring a young dancer with the Angelina Ballerina Children’s Award. From its inception, the National Dance Awards have rewarded professional excellence and promoted emerging talent at all levels. The national search for an outstanding young performer aims to encourage young people to dance and to celebrate dancing in all its diverse forms from ballet to hip-hop, salsa, ethnic and modern and we look forward to finding the recipient of this prestigious award.”

Katherine Holabird, Creator Angelina Ballerina added, Angelina Ballerina is a magical character who inspires children to follow their dreams through dance. It is a great honour to be involved with this award, and I look forward to discovering the next ‘Little Star with Big Dreams’.

In partnership since 2002, HIT Entertainment and English National Ballet have collaborated once again on a highly acclaimed follow-up production to ‘Angelina’s Star Performance’, a children’s ballet that is based on the popular children’s character Angelina Ballerina. Angelina Ballerina’s Big Audition opened in May 2009 and is currently touring across the UK. Angelina Ballerina’s Big Audition is based on the adventures of Angelina Ballerina at her new performing arts school Camembert Academy and introduces several new friends and new genres of dance.

Angelina Ballerina also welcomes an all-new television series, set to launch in the UK on Nick Jr in November 2009. The new series has been produced with a fresh new CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) look and follows a 9 year old Angelina Ballerina into the next steps of her life.
