English National Ballet
This company was founded, as London Festival Ballet, by Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin in 1950 with the aim of bringing popular ballet to the widest possible audience. A goal that continues to be met and the standard of the dancers, who hail from 19 countries, is very high. ENB performs all over Britain and at its regular London homes at the London Coliseum, and the Royal Albert Hall where its ballet-in-the-round productions have been very popular, reaching vast audiences. Matz Skoog, an admirable principal with the company in the 80's, now artistic director since 2001, offers a diet of full-length classics, often with unique touches, as in the recent production of The Nutcracker, and new challenging works. Skoog has also given young British choreographers, Cathy Marston, Michael Corder and Christopher Hampson the opportunity to create works for his company, and he encourages his own dancers to choreograph. The performances at the Linbury Theatre this spring showed some outstanding talent, not least being Thomas Edur (last year's Best Male Dancer) and Yosvani Ramos (nominated this year as Outstanding Male Artist, Classical).

George Piper Dances
Take two talented and sharp, classical dancers and give them the freedom to be creative and the result is George Piper Dances. Under William Trevitt and Michael Nunn's inspired leadership, this small but exciting group of four to five dancers continues to go from strength to strength, and has won a faithful following in Britain and Europe. It offers works of quality, and performers, including the two founders, who are multi-talented. This past season Trevitt and Nunn achieved the enviable feat of inviting five of the country's hottest choreographers to produce short works for them. The unique and exciting Critics Choice ***** was the result.

Northern Ballet Theatre
Northern Ballet Theatre performs in more UK cities than any other major ballet company. Under the direction of Canadian David Nixon since 2001, it is a company striding ahead, gathering plaudits from critics and public alike. It offers its audiences a steady diet of first class, full-scale narrative works that combine theatricality and drama with classical ballet and an appeal to all ages. The repertoire is based mainly on Nixon's own productions and include the visually stunning Madame Butterfly, the pleasurable fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, the toe-tapping I got Rhythm, and a haunting and atmospheric Wuthering Heights. This season, NBT offers a witty version of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The well-drilled company of fine dancers perform with vitality, enthusiasm and great joy.
