Ballet Black
Ballet Black was started in 2001 by Cassa Pancho as a way to provide dancers of black and Asian descent with inspiring opportunities in classical ballet. The company aims to bring ballet to a more culturally diverse audience by celebrating black and Asian dancers, while its ultimate goal is to see a fundamental change in the number of such dancers in the mainstream ballet companies. However, Ballet Black is becoming even more important as a showcase for new choreography, with Liam Scarlett, Antonia Franceschi, Martin Lawrance and Will Tuckett all contributing works in 2009.

Morphoses / The Wheeldon Company
Founded in 2007 by the British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, Morphoses is based in New York and London, with annual seasons at New York City Center and Sadler’s Wells. The company’s mission is to broaden the scope of classical ballet by emphasising innovation and fostering creativity through collaboration. For its autumn 2008 London season, the troupe featured guest dancers Leanne Benjamin and Edward Watson from Covent Garden, and Wendy Whelan and Maria Kowroski from New York City Ballet. The repertoire included works by Ashton, Robbins and Wheeldon.

Scottish Ballet
Now celebrating its 40th Anniversary, Scottish Ballet was founded by Peter Darrell. The company has enjoyed artistic triumphs and hard times during its history but was revitalised in 2002 with the arrival of new artistic director Ashley Page. The company now has an eclectic and innovative repertoire of ballet and modern dance. Scottish Ballet won the Critics’ Circle Company Prize for Outstanding Repertoire for 2007 and is nominated for the Outstanding Company Award this year in recognition of its achievements.
